Visit a fort in the Netherlands

There are a lot of forts in the Netherlands. Dutch forts belong to the military heritage. Among them, the Atlantikwal is also part of the Dutch forts. Some of these forts can be visited. They have exciting stories to tell and teach you all about the old days. We have listed the most beautiful and fascinating forts to visit.

The New Dutch Waterline
Recently we from OpstapmetLisa were invited by Visit Utrecht Region to do all kinds of winter activities in the Utrecht region. This as part of the Kom naar Buiten campaign. We did a car puzzle tour along many forts of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. This took us for example to Fort Everdingen where we stopped for coffee. In addition to a museum, Fort Everdingen also houses the Duits & Lauret brewery. In the beautiful Fort Vuren you can even stay overnight!

For children, the Geofort is really fantastic. Here they dive into the future of planet Earth. Fort Pannerden houses an escaperoom that is extra exciting due to the special ambiance. The Waterline Museum Fort near Vechten is fun and educational at the same time. Both for parents and children. Castle Slot Loevestein is part of both the New Dutch Waterline and the Old Dutch Waterline. This famous water castle has a turbulent history and is even said to be haunted!
Old Dutch Waterline
In addition to the New Dutch Waterline, there is also an Old Dutch Waterline. Besides the beautiful Slot Loevestein, the Dutch Fortress Museum is also part of it. Naarden-Vesting is one of the best preserved fortified cities in the Netherlands. The Nederlands Vestingsmuseum is located on bastion Turfpoort. Tours are given and you can even take a cruise.

The Defense Line of Amsterdam
Another line of forts is the Defence Line of Amsterdam. We like to name some of these forts and defenses in this blog. Part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, for example, is Castle Het Muiderslot. This defensive structure was built around 1285 and was very important. And of course fun to visit. Fort Island Pampus is also such a special place. This UNESCO Heritage Site is only accessible by boat, which immediately makes the visit special. Fort Island IJmuiden can also only be reached by boat. Several public days are organized, so be sure to check when you can visit. Fort K’IJK, formerly the Fort near Krommendijk, is an experience center. The teahouse is a wonderful place to take a break.

Another island of The Defense Line of Amsterdam that can only be reached by boat is Lighthouse Island. This island is located in the Markermeer and is known for its stray animals and rare flora. Also fun to visit are the Kunstfort near Vijfhuizen where exhibitions are organized and the Wijnfort Benoorden Purmerend is “inhabited” by Wijnimport J. Bart. They have no less than 750 varieties of wine in stock!

The Southern Waterline
Fort de Roovere near Halsteren lends itself to great hiking. This fort is part of the Zuiderwaterlinie and is best known for the characteristic Mozesbrug (Moses Bridge). It is so named because it looks like you are walking on water. There is a short walking route of 2 km, but you can make it as crazy as you want.
Atlantikwal
The Atlantikwal is part of the Dutch defenses, although this 5,000-kilometer defense route that runs from France to Norway was created by the Germans. Fort 1881 at Hoek van Holland is not only a museum but also a special wedding location. The fort was built back in the late 19th century to protect the Nieuwe Waterweg. During World War II, it was taken by the German occupiers. Many of the items left behind are exhibited in the museum. Super educational! Also part of the Atlantic Wall is Valkenburg Airfield. The airfield is now no longer in operation, but has experienced many highs and lows in the 67 years of its existence. And finally, especially for the little ones among us: Speel-enBunkerpark Groede Podium. This play paradise is great for children and also for parents interesting because of its location.
