Tips for a fun fall break

Fall break is already upon us. For example, the vacations start in the South region on Oct. 19 and the Central and South regions on Oct. 26! For those who are not going away during the fall break, we have great tips. For every type of weather, because you never know in autumn!
Tips when the weather is nice
It’s best when kids can expend their energy outdoors. So get outside! It’s good for them as well as for you, because they can have fun and you don’t have to keep them busy.
Get out into nature!
Do you have children who are not averse to mud, are fans of Freek Vonk and prefer to be outside all day? Then Oerrr ‘s Wild Outdoor Days are highly recommended! Search for mushrooms on a mushroom trail, go on a scavenger hunt with forester Ruben or go for a nice boat ride or hike. Or go to the beach: put on your boots, bring a bag of shells and play tag with the sea. Visiting a nature playground is also always fun, especially if you can sit there comfortably.
Have a nice walk!
Walking is healthy and also great fun to do. Even in autumn! Especially look at all the beautiful autumn colors around you. Walk the City is a super handy walking app that doesn’t require a map! The colorful pictures easily lead you from A to B. A great activity for the autumn vacations! Do you have older kids who can take a beating? Then a Horror Walk from The Little Walk of Horrors is highly recommended! These walks are 100% offline: also nice! With the city walks of The Little Walk of Horrors you discover the dark side of the city: which places and buildings have a bloody history and where is it haunted?
Play and learn at GeoFort
Interactive theme park GeoFort is focused on the future of planet earth and has a very fun and full program for the autumn vacations. So you can go to Minecraft Monday, attend a flower seed bomb making and shooting workshop on Tuesday, visit the interactive Future Theater on Wednesday and you can investigate in the lab on Thursday and Saturday. Go on an adventure!
In the Netherlands, adventures are literally on the streets. If you do Geocaching for example! It’s possible at Geofort, where you learn all about different worldly themes. An incredibly fun and educational outing!
We all know that the Netherlands had to fight against water throughout the centuries. But all that water is also useful. Just go to FutureLand, or the 2nd Maasvlakte. Here you can learn all about Europe’s smartest and largest port: Rotterdam! Or look for answers to assignments in a city of your choice during a real treasure hunt. Get to know the city in a playful way and learn to work together!
Amusement park day
Visiting an amusement park is always a treat! You can of course go to one of the more famous amusement parks, but you can also choose a smaller amusement park. Here you will find a number of recommendations. Of course, October is also the month of horror. In these amusement parks you can find exciting haunted houses.
Knight or lady of the castle for 1 day
A day at a castle is always fun and educational. At Castle Hoensbroek there is always something fun organized during the autumn vacations and this year is no different! In addition, there are always fun scavenger hunts to do. It is not for nothing that the castle has been voted the best Kidsproof children’s outing of 2023!
At Castle de Haar, you can literally be under the gun from October 14 to March 29, 2024. During this special event you will discover the weather passages and the spires. Really a fun outing for the autumn vacations!
At Slot Loevestein you can learn musket shooting, explode gunpowder and enjoy climbing during the autumn vacations. Or will you come and watch the Knight’s Tournament? Amerongen Castle will be completely dark during the autumn vacation! Do you dare to join one of the torchlight tours? During these exciting tours you walk through the castle with a flashlight while hearing stories about the former residents.
Tracking in autumn
We stay outside for a while because there is so much to see, do and experience here! In autumn you always find the most beautiful treasures in the forest: autumn leaves, acorns and chestnuts. Take some home to craft with later. Or try to find mushrooms and take a picture of them. Happy hunting! We have tips for you on where to find the most beautiful mushrooms. You can find our tips here!
Nice and adventurous!
Do you have older children and are you not averse to adventure yourself? Then Adventure City in Rotterdam is the perfect outing for your family! They have the most spectacular climbing courses, zipline trails and for the real daredevils: the free fall! Do you dare?
Tips for when it rains outside
In autumn it can sometimes rain outside. A little rain is no big deal, but when it’s rough outside, we have tips for indoors here, too!
Do crafts inside
Actually, in the weeks before the autumn vacations you should already be looking for chestnuts, leaves, acorns and other fun natural products to craft with. If the weather turns bad, you’ll have more than enough to do at home. For example, take a look on Pinterest for fun fall craft ideas (or ideas for Halloween)! If you don’t have a Pinterest account yet, you can easily create one for free. For example, you can dry autumn leaves between a thick book and then make beautiful works of art out of them. Or, also fun, use them as stencils while splashing paint (with a toothbrush). Chestnuts and acorns can be used to make cute little dolls and animals. Look for even more crafting tips in this blog.
The whole house bakes
Get the baking utensils ready because we are going to bake! Homemade baked goods always taste great and it’s always a fun job, even with the little housemates. From a simple apple pie with ready-made puff pastry, brownie from a packet and shortbread cookies to a no-bake cheesecake or apple pie! What will you make? You can also make different treats and have a tasty tasting afterwards. Fun for young and old alike!
