8 Tips to combat an autumn dip

Summer is over and autumn is back in the country. Many people have gloomy feelings as the leaves fall. But how to make sure you’re going to enjoy autumn as much as summer? We have a few tips for you that will make it all (hopefully) a little less bad for you.
Autumn: cold, rain and getting back into the swing of things
Think to yourself why you are having trouble with the new season. Is it because the sun shines less, it gets darker earlier and it’s colder? Is it because it’s raining more often or are you just balking at the fact that the normal rhythm has begun again? Probably all a little bit. But there are also nice sides to autumn. When I think of autumn, one word immediately comes to mind: coziness. So that is what we are going to emphasize in this blog. We bet that by the end of this blog you will no longer suffer from an autumn dip
Get outside!
You can dress for cold, and if it rains bring an umbrella. Autumn should not be an excuse not to go outside. Exercise and being outdoors is good for humans. In fact, you produce hormones when you move that make you happy. So go out and dress according to the type of weather. Check your phone for the weather forecast and go out. Alone or socialize with a friend. Take a long walk on the beach or go to the woods. The colors of nature are beautiful in autumn, so try to take notice of that.
Tip: During your walk, collect beautiful things like shells, stones, branches, acorns and chestnuts. You can make a beautiful autumn table out of these!
Make it cosy at home
We all notice that the days are getting shorter and it is getting colder at home. High time to make it cozier at home! Cozy up with a blanket on the couch and the candles on, for example! Or make a cozy autumn table with mini pumpkins, autumn leaves and everything you can find outside at this time. You really don’t have to be very creative to make this! Earlier we wrote a blog about Hygge: a term blown over from Denmark. There it rains even more than in the Netherlands and because they are further north, the daytime in autumn is much shorter. They know how to make the best of it and have literally turned sociability into an art. We can all learn something from this!
Cozy up your garden
In autumn, the garden often looks unsociable. You would spontaneously get an autumn dip. The flowers have finished blooming and the leaves are shedding. You have to prepare your garden for winter anyway, so make it a lot cozier! With nice autumn/winter flowering plants, for example. A hardy heather plant in your garden gives long lasting color and thus coziness. The Anemone is one of the most beautiful autumn flowering plants, but also the Aster provides color in your garden. Pampergrass is a fast-growing grass that is at its most beautiful in the fall. Silverspur or Actaea, is also beautiful. While you are at it: immediately hang nice lighting in the garden that works on solar energy. Sustainable and cozy! These tips also apply to people with balconies, of course! Find a hobby
Many people become happy when they can do something with their hands. So find a fun hobby! Maybe you’ll discover a hidden talent in yourself? Check out Pinterest or read this blog for tips. Don’t know where to start? Then visit a hobby store. You’ll find inspiration there. Maybe even online at one of these cozy online hobby stores. Or really roll up your sleeves and get crafting. This will get you through those long evenings!
Enjoy reading
Curl up on the couch with a fun book! Reading by a pool in the sun is fun, but reading while the rain gently taps on the window, too! Many fun books are coming out again in the fall, such as the latest Stephen King: Fairy Tale. Are you more into feel-good? Then I highly recommend Manuela Inusa’s series about some cozy English stores. The fifth book was released on Oct. 4 and is called The Charming Gift Shop. You might enjoy browsing at your local bookstore and giving yourself some reading material. But sometimes it is also nice to “look up an old friend” as we call it at home. So picking out a book that you have read before but found very beautiful, joyful or nice. Books keep the autumn dip away at home!
Make sure you have something to look forward to
Try to schedule something fun every month. A high tea or dinner with a friend, a weekend away in your own country with your partner, a dinner at home for your closest family, pick a recipe every weekend and cook it together, an evening at the cinema with that cozy colleague, shopping with your sister…. You name it!
Spontaneous fun actions
Don’t forget the spontaneous simple things like a movie night on the couch with your partner with a nice drink from the deli (or just a bag of chips, nothing wrong with that either). Or call that one friend you know could use a break and invite her over for coffee. Make an extra large pot of soup or bake a fragrant apple pie and bring some to that lonely neighbor, or borrow someone’s dog and go for a long walk. Breaking your daily pattern is a killer for that autumn dip. And it is much appreciated.
Fun television
Finally, there’s always fun television in the fall. In the summer period it’s always a bit of a bummer on TV (except for B&B full of Love!) but in the fall everything goes off at once! And otherwise we always have Netflix, HBO Max, Videoland and NPO Start. So get out that blanket and binge until you drop! What an autumn dip!
