Cycling, hiking and more in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is a wonderful vacation country. Especially walking and cycling, you get to know your own country very well and even learn something from it. Therefore, we have created a series in which cycling and walking are central.
Cycling and hiking in South Holland
Even urban South Holland is full of beautiful natural areas. Here you can enjoy biking and hiking. But there is much more to do in Zuid-Holland. Have you ever explored the Green Heart? And do you know the island of Tiengemeten? And did you know that besides the dunes on the coast, there are also very beautiful dunes in other places in the Netherlands? Do you often find the beach too crowded? We have tips for quieter beaches. But don’t tell anyone, eh?
Cycling and hiking in North Holland
North Holland is also much more varied in terms of biking and hiking than you might initially think. There are beautiful natural areas but also lovely villages and historic towns where you can wander around for hours. The Blaricummerheide is also a must for lovely walks. This vast moorland is beautiful and very quiet. Maybe you will find a hazelworm or stand eye to eye with a Scottish Highlander!
Outdoors in the province of Utrecht
Utrecht is much more than just the city of Utrecht. You can enjoy cycling and walking, but there are also beautiful estates to visit, such as Duin and Kruidberg. By the way, you can go there for a delicious high tea and it’s haunted too! And have you ever been to Kasteel de Haar? These and other castles are really beautiful! You can find them here in our overview.
Nice and active in North Brabant
In North Brabant, you can have a great time outdoors. Of course, you can go cycling and hiking because of all the nature, but you can also enjoy yourself in another way in this province. Go to a climbing park, for example. Enjoy climbing in the trees, but in a safe and responsible way. Or go swimming outdoors in a recreational area.
Exploring in Limburg
You can get to know Limburg in many ways. Like by bike or on foot! There is also plenty to do for children in Limburg. Like climbing and tobogganing in Landgraaf. A visit to one of the caves in Limburg, the Velvet Cave is highly recommended. Especially on a hot day, because it stays nice and cool in the caves. Then immediately visit the castle ruins of Valkenburg!
Find nature in Gelderland
Gelderland is known for its many natural areas such as De Veluwe. You can therefore enjoy biking and hiking in this province. Even more green: visit a botanical garden like the Passiflorahoeve. Botanical gardens are well represented in the Netherlands, more beautiful tropical gardens can be found here.
In search of history in Drenthe
Drenthe is a beautiful province where you can do a lot besides cycling and walking. Especially in Hoogeveen there is plenty to do! You can read it in the blog of our guest blogger Marian. She also likes to go on vacation in Drenthe with her family because there is something for everyone.
Visit the Hanseatic cities in Overijssel
Overijssel is known for its Hanzen cities such as Zwolle and Ommen. Among other things, we have found great cycling and hiking routes in this province. Want to combine nature and shopping? In Utrecht you can also enjoy yourself on the water. For example in a canoe! Our youngest guest blogger Fenne wrote a nice blog about that.
Cycling and hiking in Friesland and Groningen
The north of the Netherlands is always very quiet and the landscape is wonderfully wide. So it’s great for hiking and biking! Take Groningen for example! It has beautiful nature reserves including the Wadden area. You can read our tips in Groningen here. Friesland is also a great place to be, especially in the Drents-Friese Wold which is also partly in Drenthe. You can enjoy cycling and hiking here without meeting too many people.
